How does linking work?

I understand that SEs index and treat pages separately, rather than a whole website.

If I get Joe to ad a link to mysite on his home page, and I add a link to Joe's homepage on one of my article pages, is this a reciprocating link? Or, in order for a link to be "reciprocating" does it have to point back to the exact page that's linking to my site?

I believe the general defition of a reciprocal link is between two websites rather than pages. Typically such links point to the homepage of each site, but the links themselves appear on inner pages.
