Good morning from rainy Belgium...

I need to defend linkbuilding in terms of return on investment: how high will the increase in SE & organic traffic be if their is a strong focus on link development?

Thx,
A

All depends on where you get the links from.

Links from relevant, high ranking sites will get you more visitors. But it does take time, dont expect results overnight, unless you have done something spectacular and you get listed on all the major news site and social bookmarking sites overnight.

Its hard work, takes time, but its worth it if you do it right

Considering your incoming links carry more weight than probably anything else you could do to raise your rankings in the SERPs, I'd say it's a good investment. Unless of course, you are a big brand name and links naturally come to you without doing anything.

It has been my experience that the more you get, the easier they seem to come. The more people are aware of your site/brand, the more likely they are to be referencing your site with links and talking about your site on their sites, blogs, etc.

A very rough rule of thumb (I think this was actually expressed somewhere at a pubcon a few years ago by some search engine folks) is that traffic doubles for every space you move up on the front page. So if you're #4, take your traffic and double it to go to #3, double again to #2, double again to #1.

Of course that's one of those things that 'there's so many other factors' that it's really a tough question.
