just a bit of a rant, sorry.

I am getting annoyed by all these emails asking for links exchange, but 'because link exchange does not work anymore, we offer three way links'.

If you have a site that is complementary to mine, or can bring something to my visitors, I happily exchange links with you, or even do a 1 way link to you (I already do).

But don't bother me if:
1. you think that link exchange between relevant site is dead;
2. you believe that search engines are stupid enough to be gamed by 3 way links;
3. you can't realise that my site is about widgets and yours is totally different so our visitors would not gain anything by us linking to each other;
4. want me to link to you from my 'quality' site while you link to me from a directory full of 'cr*p'

yes I guess it should have been less of a rant and more of a why I do not want 3 way links / why three way links are not the new link exchange / silver bullet

Silver bullits aside, do you have any hard information that this sort of linking structure will produce no SEO benefit? I'm just curious whether you have any facts. Google has trouble enough spotting paid links and a whole bunch of blackhat stuff.

I just got the same email and thought I might try it with a brain dead site that's received no love from me for a long, long time. I just don't want to commit to a complete waste of time if there's a body of SEO expert opinion that the tool will produce grief.

If the link is totally unrelated, then any traffic from it will also be unrelated.

Pretty obvious really.

I hate these type of desperate link hunters - it just wastes everyone's time. Nothing to gain from it.

What if both parties have 2 sites. You could do the links so that there is no connection. I link to somebodies site they link back to me from another site to another site of mine.

Yeah, I think that's the way it's supposed to work. I went ahead and signed up for the thing figuring I have nothing to lose with a dead site. What's happened is that my new resources page is filling up with theme related and on-topic links (financial area), FWIW. Not a single Viagra, diet pill or similar link, so far.

So, we'll see if any benefit comes from this. Is my hat now gray or black?

Speaking of...I often get emails from webmasters, asking for a link from my quality, on-topic site to theirs in exchange for a link from a general directory...hm. It gets you wondering-- is there anyone who would be tricky enough to submit your link to a general directory, and then send a letter to you posing as the owner of that directory once the link is posted? In any case, why would I give you a website link in exchange for a directory link? I can get that for free.

Because they control that directory. The directory is created for facilitating three way link exchanges. You won't receive a link from that particular directory otherwise.
