And if you're the industrious type and are sending out lots of cut 'n' pasted e-mails, make sure that the important bits of the mail, like the recipients name, website etc., are in a different font from the rest of the message. This gives the illusion of a carefully crafted, highly personal message.
Either that, or have the links open up in a frame on your site so the site doesn't leak PR.
An added touch is to tell them to forward this letter to 10 friends before sundown or else their hair will fall out and they will have bad luck for 7 years.

'While this is a common practice' means that it is the defacto standard. As we all know the web is built upon strict adherence to standards.
People who denigrate web standards often are actually marketing a 'proprietary' alternative. These people are not satirists they are <deleted>.
Might I ask if you are attempting to sell us 'best practice' in place of 'common practice'?

I think you can figure out the rest.
Provide a link in your automated link exchange request to the page on your high quality site where you've so graciously linked to the recipient. That page where their link appears should have a Google PageRank™ of 0-3 (zero to three) with 0 being the best, and have a unique keyword rich directory path like this...
No, no, no. No path, should be orphan page with PR 0. They'll never notice. (someone tried that on me a few days ago)
