I am looking for everyone here to build a list of ideas, tips and thought about building backlinks through means of link bait / viral marketing.

I just built a very nice website with 250 pages of interesting stuff about widgets. There is a good few number of websites on the same topic.

I am looking for tips and tricks to help build backlinks in forums, blogs and basically get people talking online about this new website.

can you think of any useful tools to build, offer to others and link back to your site?
run a contest of some sort.
be the 1st to write about new stuff in your niche
have a complete resource list for others to link to

there are going to be 100's of other options as well. this will just start the list.

Link bait is great for SEO sites etc but if you are in a sector where not everyone has a blog to link to you it is a lot more difficult IMO. How can you do link bait for a mom and pop site who sells boring widgets?

Surprisingly I've found a lot of seemingly boring mom and pop industries have very tight, devout communities that often have webpages or blogs (albeit not very nice looking ones).

Seriously, anything that gets passed about. Free downloads are always good, depending upon the nature of your widgets. Also free give aways, mugs, t-shirts, pens, mouse mats etc.

graywolf, I am still a sceptic. There are some watermellons that are more interesting than others. If you have some boring product you have done a viral campaign for sucessfully I would like to hear how you went about it in a blow by blow account.

I don't have any products I can talk about without violating client agreements. However if you want an example search for [dvd rewinder] or [toilet paper RSS reader] since both are imaginary products I'm not giving away anybody's commercially viable terms. Want some real life examples visit the shopping channel on the new Netscape.com, people trying to go viral there everyday, watch it for a week and see what works and what doesn't.

As far as finding someone who will wear a watermelon bikini, craigslist would be my top choice, you'll have to do some screening but should have a plethora of choices. Discuss with your own legal team any release requirements.

The Internet Mob has kidnapped Patches, my favorite stuffed pal from my childhood, and is holding him hostage.

Please link to my website, and send an eMail to [e-mail], and let them know where the link is. They will only count one link per website, so please don't upset them by trying to trick them with multiple links from the same site.

Patches was always there for me when I needed him most--please help me return the favor!

What about an on line group. I did this with one of my sites and it helps with getting the word out. People do pass e-mails to friends.

theres nothing I hate more than bots spamming my forums with links to their sites. I added more registration security to keep them out.

Do some thing which will gain attention GOOD OR BAD it should generate links ...

Write some thing controversial about some one who is famous and you will get tonnes of links ;)
