Do you just email lots of related websites and ask? Are most webmaster nice about responding to you?

Depends how you word your request. If someone sends me a canned response, it goes in the dump. If someone proves they actually looked at my site before writing, I'll investigate.

Send out million of mails and use the law of averages.

that is so scary, and may be the worst advice i have ever read in this forum.

Scarey but effective :)

Okay. Can you share with us the pros and cons of this approach?

effective in getting you tossed out of your webhost and getting blacklisted as a spammer by other organizations. I'll skip.

True guys, this method is only for people who know what they are doing and is going to make people angry. The list of pitfalls is huge:

Spamcop hassling you
ISP cutting you off
shutting down servers
blacklisted domain

Plus unsolicited mail is illegal :) But anyway if you do find a way around all that then the results are lots of links per day.

i don't know if it is illegal, but it surely won't make you any friends.

don't spam people asking for links - think of something more ingenious to attract the types of links you really want...

There are many forums which allow you to directly solicit link exchanges. Mostly webmaster and SEO forums.
Visit each one and make sure they allow you to directly ask for a link exchange. You will also find many others who are looking as well.

Also search the web and look for ten really top sites in your niche. Then do not just propose a link exchange but propose cross promotions. Sometimes you need just a few quality partners.

I did this with one very good webmaster. We each make about $1200. per month from each other. I just need 10 more like him.

Good luck.
Matt

Make great content that people want to link to. I never take any interest in people who email me asking to be linked to.

If you have great content then submit to one of those news sites where contributers, like yourself, can post links to good articles. I can think of at least 5 really good ones, but can't post them here.

If your content is good enough it will get popular and visitors will grow. If your content ISN"T any good, then nothing will work.

You will be surpised at what is "good content". On one site I visit there was a link to a great article on "what language do deaf people think in". A facinating topic with about 100 word answer that generated 100's of hits and links.

Get a sub contractor in India or somewhere from elance to get link exchange for you (people that send me "Can we link" emails get the reply "Use the form" - they do not, they miss out but I don't as they tend to be the sort I want to avoid anyway. Have an automated link exchanger your end (checks for clean good reciprocal link to you on their site, auto-immediately adds theirs to yours). There are other factors you need also to look at as a link is not a good link unless.....
