I would suggest doing some research on guerrilla marketing. Then transfer it to the web. ;)

Very difficult to do in the competitive markets - there's nothing new under the sun in these arenas and most sites are sick of all the link requests and tricks.

Still, it can be done. I'm working on what I believe is the one of the few real linkbait projects in my saturated financial sector niche, and fully expect links from the professional organizations and .edu's. I've been in the sector for decades and SEO'ing in the sector for years and it's still taken me this long to do something other than manually building links. It's not easy (or everyone would be doing it right? :) ).

I'd rather not be specific - but for me I've answered the question 'what would a researcher in this industry find of interest, of possible research value, or just plain nifty while still industry related?'. Build it, then start promoting it.

Start with:
- who does research in something related to the travel field? (aircraft designers? Pilot sleep studies? hotel architects?)
- Check the colleges and universities for people in this field - or departments. Then look at what type of thing they're researching.
- Can you do some work to provide them some related information? What about just a tool that they'd find 'neat'?

C'mon there are still link bait ideas out there it's just a matter of thinking outside of the box. Run a travel site about Paris run a contest asking people to send their best, worst, and/or most romantic pictures of themselves in front of the Eiffel tower. If you post a picture of someone on your website and they have a blog chances are they will link to it ...

Selling luggage why not start a blog written by a lost piece of luggage that's making it's way around the world traveling airport to airport, picking up stickers and getting more tattered on the way. You could even Photoshop it into some environment shots ...

Booking Cruises? Gather up pictures of the most expensive rooms on the top luxury liners and how much they cost and list all of the amenities ... Staterooms of the Rich and Famous ...

There's no denying if you pay for top talent you can get good ideas and good results, but not everyone has a large budget to work with. When I kick it into high gear for link bait I'm trying at least one idea a month. Not everything works, and in fact some completely fail, but you're never going to make a shot that you don't take. Additionally make it easy for people to "digg", "delicious", "rededit", "furl" or whatever else you want them to do by suggesting it with text, bookmarklets, or buttons. Lastly it's always helpful if you've done some favors or helped out a few folks in the space who can help "get things started"
