Is it better to have links from main page of site?

How effective is this method?

Is there any other way to have links to my site from other sites main page then emailing webmasters?

Andreww... I'm not sure I understand your first question, but in reference to your second question:

Is there any other way to have links to my site from other sites main page then emailing webmasters?

Probably not. In fact, contacting other site owners/webmasters is probably your best bet for getting your site URL listed on their pages.

The only other "legal" way to get your links listed (without contacting webmasters), is to setup RSS/XML feeds.

If your site contains valuable content, other webmasters may pickup your RSS feeds and add them to their site.

Outside of those two things, you'd have to do something illegal and unethical to get your site listed on another.
