What's the best way to get websites or blogs listed on other blogs?

Should you leave a comment (relevant comment, obviously) with a signature or should you contact the webmaster directly and ask him to review your site/blog or offer to exchange links, etc?

I'm asking the question because its an area I haven't really explored yet and I don't want to get off on the wrong foot.

heh, interesting one. I think this is going to become more and more fashionable this coming year. You need to learn about rss and tagging on blogs for maximum effect.

Leaving a relevant comment on a high rated blog, I think this is excellent and easy too.

commenting will help you.

I had commented on a blog and it does figure in the search result for my site, though NOT in Google but in MSN.

I should point out this linking exercise is for traffic, not rankings.

So, a relevant comment is best, then?

What about this backtracking? Is that important?

If your site is interesting enough others will do it for you!

Have you done the submissions to the main directories? That's a start. Comments are good but, for my blog, they aren't the place to ask for a backlink. Most of the time if someone posts a link in my blog, I'll follow the link and take a look...
