If current trends continue, it seems everybody except Elvis and you Aunt Sally's Cat will have blog next year. Do you have one? Do you use it get links back to your website?

Backend Steps

You're going to need to integrate a blog into your existing website. Think "Widget News", "Widget Trends", or "Widget Happenings".

Next your going to need to integrate Trackback into your blog. If you use one of the major blog tools (aside from Google) chances are it will already be done for you. If you use Google's Blogger you'll need a third party solution. (search for "how to install trackback into blogger").

Finding the News

Now go to your favorite online news service. Set up a news alert for your keyphrases. You're looking for big industry news, things that will be "front of mind" for lots of people. Sometimes the more controversial the better. You'll know these stories when you see them.

Next start looking for the really big/popular blogs in your industry. It's not important you get these all right off the bat you'll find them over time. Subscribe to them via your favorite RSS reader.

Letting the rubber hit the road

So you get an alert about a news topic you think is good or a get alerted via you're RSS reader, now what do you do now? Nothing!

Ok really you should just read the article. Then forget about it for few days. You may want to send yourself a reminder about the article in 3-4 days.

Now go and search for "your news item" and "trackback". Go and read the articles. If you like it make a note of the URL.

Now go write your own blog. Make references from the other articles you like. Post links to these other articles.

Now go to your trackback control center and send a trackback ping to the other articles.

As long as you don't look to spammy chances are they won't delete the trackback link and you'll have a reciprocal link to a deep page on your website

With all this talk about Hilltop, Authority and Expert sites chances are many of these big popular blogs fit into one of these classification.

okey i have had the net for about 6 or so years and have never ever used a blog.. well not knowenly.. arent they just like message boards or something.. to be honest i advoid them!

Hey graywolf,great post.

There are many creative uses for a blog. Creatively conceived blogs rank in the top three for some competitive areas. If you aren't blogging you aren't doing everything you can to increase your link development network. But I think a strong dose of creative conceptualization can help the effort's chances of success.

Blogging is about building communities. If you build a good enough blog people will start linking to you. I have a number of blogs on a wide area of subjects.

Came home with this idea from vegas. Now have two blogs. One is a straight news site on a community portal/forum that I run. The second has a more devious rationale. It's a book review site where I read and review books relevant to a niche. I'm hoping to get some incoming links and maybe some traffic. We'll see. If I can get some motion going, I should get:
- a nice site to that I can use to provide relevant links.
- maybe some amazon affiliate bucks :)
- it's in a high CPC industry ($10-$20 for front page), so if I get some traffic I'll put up adsense.

All in all, if it goes, it should be profitable on it's own, when the intent is simply to be able to get some good inbound links.

I don't have a blog and don't think I will get one any time soon. I just don't see a point.

I use WordPress for news, but it doesn't have that blog look at all, and comments and ping backs are all disabled. I just like the interface and features of the WP.

IMO pingbacks will be discounted by SEs very soon. It's just getting out of control.
