It may appear to be a stupid question but I'm working on the link development for a client. He already has quite a few inbound links but they are spread between 3 urls:- redwidgets.co.uk, red-widgets.co.uk and redwidgets.com. The latter 2 urls point to the 1st one. If the inbound links are to the second two are they useless as far as say Google is concerned because they just point to the main domain?

Should I contact all these site owners and ask them to link to the main url?

Cheers :)

How do they point to the main one? The proper way to do is to use 301 redirect and then all the links will be combined and counted as one.

I agree. Make sure those url's are using a 301 and not a regular forward or you could get hit for a duplicate content penalty. From this point on, I would pick the base url the site actually appears on and work the links to that one.
