Can you ever have too many links?

I just recently launched a new recip linking campaign, and already have well over 3000 prospects. What I'm trying to figure out is, should there be a limit as to how many recip links one site has listed in their recip directory? Can your site be dubbed as a link farm if you have thousands upon thousands of links in your resource pages?

I never really thought about it, but now that I have so many damn links to add, it's beginning to creep up in my mind that I may be becoming a linkfarm without even knowing it.

Even though you have exchanged links with many sites, I would think it would be a good idea to go in and delete the least desireable ones every so often. And I'll bet half the people here don't even bother to review the sites and the link exchange. The links could be dead, or pointing to pr0n sites.

You make a good point, but the question is, do my recip link pages dub me as a link farm because of the 1000's of links they hold?

Who you link to says something about what your site. If you link to spammy sites, then there's a chance that you will be deemed spammy too. That's why Google warns to be careful of who you link to.

This is just my opinion, but I would not be comfortable doing recips with unrelated industries.

See.. What I'm trying to get at is that ALL of my link partners are relevant, and ALL carry lots of backlinks from their sites. If I only had 20 partners, then it wouldn't cross my mind at all. But what is bothering me a bit is that with all of these relevant link partners, would my site be considered somewhat of a linkfarm because the recip pages of mine have THOUSANDS of recip partner links, whereas every other site I see has under a hundred.

note: I don't have thousands of links on each page, just in total, from all of the recip link partner pages.

Sort of surprising with the numbers you mention, but you should know ;-)

You could consider narrowing the focus to reflect a more specific topic, and might then be able promote a niche directory in its own right.

Well, they are all relevant by means that all of the sites with the recip link pages that link back are all in the same category as mine. It's a fairly popular one too, so having a few thousand links is just scratching the surface in this category.
