Let's assume I have a site: xyz.com
It has 3 directories:
xyz.com/red-boxes/
xyz.com/blue-boxes/
xyz.com/green-boxes/
Each of the 3 directories has pages about that directory's topic.
Let's assume I am trying to optimize my site for the following 3 phrases:
"red boxes"
"blue boxes"
"green boxes"
Let's say I have 30 link partners. Each is willing to give me one link with anchor text of my choice.
Should I have 10 partners link to each directory with the appropriate anchor text (meaning none of the partners would link to the root domain)? Or should I have all 30 partners link to the root domain in groups of 10 partners for each of the three targetted phrases?
Does the link reputation filter through the site if the partners link only to the root? Does the link popularity? That is, will a hypothetical page about "red boxes" (xyz.com/red-boxes/all-about-red-boxes.html) rank higher than my competition even if all inbound links are pointed at my root domain?
Sorry if this I've made this needlessly complicated, but I'm trying to sort it out in my head. I'm stumped.
Let's say you have 45 links partners. Send 5 to the home page for red boxes, 5 to the home page for blue boxes, and 5 to the home page for green boxes, then 10 to the red boxes internal page, 10 to the blue boxes internal page, and 10 to the internal green boxes page. You'll then have 15 links to the home page and 10 links to each of the 3 internal pages.
If you also had yellow boxes, orange boxes and brown boxes, you'd end up with 30 links to your home page and 10 links to each of the 6 internal pages.
Also 'green boxes' is only 11 characters (counting the space, and I believe google looks at 50 characters of anchor text, so you could conceivably get more color words in the anchor text, and still have them all count the same towards the target page.
