Hi,

I'm having a little problem installing a Fireworks HTML menu into my site. This is my first menu using Fireworks. I used it because I am using loads (up to a thousand) of pages and want to update my site as easily as possible. If I used text links then I would have to update all of my pages one by one and can get a bit of a drag because I'm planning on making plenty of pages. I thought that if I used this image menu then all I would have to do is add a new link in fireworks, export the fireworks html to my hard drive and upload to overwrite all of the files and all the pages would be updated.

I wanted to know if it is at all possible to create an external file and to call upon my menu when needed? I could program this into my pages before I start to duplicate my template. I don't want to use frames for my side menu as it would put my newly designed template out of proportion.

Many thanks in advance,
Terry

I'm not sure I follow your problem. You say you are using a template, therefore wouldn't any changes to the template would be reflected across the site?

Anyway, you can do what you describe by using a proprietary template technology (if you have Dreamweaver, which is "related" to Fireworks) or using an "include" in whichever dynamic language is best for you.

One advantage of doing this would be the ability to use the text links that you are talking about.

Fireworks is a great web graphics programme. However the HTML and javascript it produces for its menus are not one of its strong points.

The Fireworks PopUpMenu generator creates an (huge) external JS file. This will be called by pages that use your menus. If you place it in a template in a non editable region then all the pages that uses the template will have the Menus.

A warning though - as Stever said they are not exactly the most efficient products - They do not work in some browsers and users sometimes have JS disabled.

And probably most importantly - Links in JavaScript are not spidered so your traffic might suffer - unless you provide a HTML alternative.
