I've Got Photoshop Elements 2 And Silverfast SE

they came bundled with an Epson Perfection 3200 scanner

Before getting the scanner, I used MS Photodraw 2. It's been discontinued and has no support so I'm dropping it.

At this time I primarily use the software to touch up family photos - many are recent, but some are about a hundred years old and in bad shape.

I can get Paint Shop Pro 8 for $59. I don't mind spending it if it would be an upward move, but I'd keep my money in my pocket if it's a lateral move. Any opinions?

BTW, I have no intention of spending several hundred dollars on Photoshop or it's ilk, so don't suggest it.

Photoshop elements is an excellent cut down version of the full program. I would highly recommend you use this. It has much of the functionality as it's father and the fact that you have paid nothing for it is a blessing.

If you decide you like it - and you will if you use it, then it will not be long before you think about investing in the daddy :)

I have used Ulead PhotoImpact for many years.

It pretty much does everything that I need, but then so would Paint Shop Pro 8.

I just found the interface easier on PhotoImpact

Either of these are a match for PhotoShop in all but the most complicated areas.

If you don't care for the controls in Photoshop Elements, I've heard nothing but good things about PaintShopPro.

PS elements 2 is an excellent photo editor - particularly if you're just using it for personal photo stuff. It isn't really missing that much when compared to PhotoShop 7 (if you're only doing family photo stuff). Stick with that instead of splashing out on PaintShop Pro, which IMO, isn't that good anyhow...
