Subselecting and Superselecting

I don't get it

I am plowing through the Fireworks bible, but I think this is also a photoshop question as well.

What is subselecting and superselecting? I don't get how to use either of them, and I don't know when I would need to use them..? I just don't get it.

If they *are* Photoshop commands I haven't stumbled across them myself yet... which means at least *I* haven't found any times when I need to use them.

Any Fireworks junkies out there want to field this one? (I know we've got at least ONE Fireworks junkie out there....)

Familiar with grouping objects?

Then I'll begin.....

In a group of objects you can select the individual parts that make up the whole group - this is called subselecting

Or you can select all the items that make up the whole group - this is called superselecting

the White arrow (to the right of the normal black arrow) is the subselect tool. Click on the group to select a subsection of the group with this tool, holding down shift will allow you to select more than one item.

Is that enough info?

The best thing I did for myself and Fireworks was buy the Fireworks 3 video from MM. It covers all that stuff and I think it was only like $25. There really is a lot of features that it does because of the "vector stroke over bitmap fill" thing going on. It's definitely different from PS in that respect.

While you're selecting things dont forget you can hold down the "shift" key to select multiple items and by selecting one item while holding the "alt" key and dragging you create a copy. By selecting multiple items and then going to "modify" and then "align" and then "distribute widths", well you can see what it does.

I cant wait to get FW4 :)
