I have Illustrator 8. Im giving the .ai file to a friend, and i was wondering if they embed the fonts? Would i have to put the font + ai file on disk?

You can do that, or you can convert your font to outlines (basically converting your font ot a shape). You won't be able to edit it anymore like a font but it will transfer perfectly. (I advise making a copy and convert the copy to outlines) You do this by selecting the font and hitting the key combination of ctl + O for Windows, cmd + O for Mac.

you can embed fonts but you will have problems sometimes in how they render. Your best bet is to send the font along with the file. if he is on a different platform such as mac/win. then you might want to search for the same font for pc. Outlines can work, but be careful that its limited to art text and not a block of copy. This makes yoru files huge and and unstable
