Hi all,

I know NOTHING about layers, masks or other scary gfx stuff and I'd like to learn. With the Gimp.

I've looked for appropriate tutorials but they all assume some kind of bloody degree in PS or somthing.....

Anyone give me a push in the right direction?

(no. the ones on the official site are dreadful ;))

Nick have you looked at any of these [directory.google.com]?

I haven't done much with it. It is hard to use anything when I have access to photoshop.

Excellent! -- Silly, I completely missed going to see if there is a directory listing for this stuff. Thanks! ;)

Ditto... hehehe. I've d@mn near got a degree in Photoshop, and using anything else inevitably makes me think, "Boy, this would be a lot easier if I was using Photoshop." Hehe.

But the Open Source nerd community must have gobs of tutorials for GIMP out there somewhere... not to say they'll be the best tutorials, what with the lack of paid technical writers, but do drop a line here when you find some good ones!

Well, this is the one I've found most helpful so far, a very thourough (but not so 'hands on') book that can be downloaded for free: Grokking the GIMP [gimp-savvy.com]
