i am having difficulties achieving the rollover effect with my button in photoshop. I cannot seen to get it working even after looking in the book. Please somebody help.

it's difficult to give advice when you don't exactly know what the problem is, can you be more specific? Apart from the book try a search on google for tutorials photoshop tutorials :)
