viewing jpgs on Mac and PC

can't view on PC but can view on Mac....

hi,

I have a CD ROM with a bunch of jpgs on it. I can open them on a Mac but i can't access them at all on my PC. i get a pop up that says "the device isn't ready" on my PC (although i can view other CD ROM's so i know my PC isn't broken)

i know that each platform needs to sofware specifically for that platform but i thought that jpgs were cross platform and i would be able to burn to CD and view regardless of platform that they would be opened on?

Is there any other format that i could burn images on CD ROM so that they can be viewed on both platforms with the one CD or would i need to make a copy for each platform?

My last experience was that if the CD is burned for Macs - even though .jpg's are cross platform - your PC CD hardware will not recognize a Macintosh formatted CD to see all those lovely little cross-platform .jpg's... or anything else, for that matter. Macs can read PC or Mac formatted CD's. Hardly seems fair, does it?

There's probably some updated hardware that will, though. This was awhile back that I experienced it. I'm due for a new CD writer/burner, anyway.

If you format a CD for PC (ISO whatever-the-number format), a Mac can read it just fine. If you burn a CD in Mac format, a PC has no idea what to do with it...

You can burn CDs in dual format, but since Mac has no problem with PC format, I just burn all my CDs on a Mac in PC format so anyone can view them.

That's the format I use to burn CDs under Linux too.

karakas, are you saying that burning using so9660 means that Linux can read the jpgs too? i am on PC, my client is on Mac and my tech lead is on Linux...would be great if we could all actually communicate:-)

ISO 9660 is the "standard" format for CDs. Linux, Windows and Mac can all read them. So if the person with the CD burner uses that format, you should be able to all play together just fine. :)
