Can Arial and Helvetical peacefully co-exist on Windows?

I bought Adobe Type Basics [adobe.com] partly in hopes of using Helvetica for some graphics instead of Arial. So I was surprised to fire up the graphic programs and find the standard Helvetica displaying exactly the same as the standard Arial. (How to Spot Arial [ms-studio.com]) Curiously, Helvetica Narrow displays very differently than Arial Narrow, as it should, but nowhere does standard Helvetica escape the substitution shadow of standard Arial.

Is there any hope for this eager font newbie?

hi sean,

if the gfx app says, you're using helvetica (not arial, and helvetica is not replaced with arial), then you're using it. if you have any doubts, why don't you temporary remove arial from you sys and see what's happening?

Hakre, thanks for the response, but I assure you the app shows the name Helvetica yet it is pixel-for-pixel Arial. The only time I see the real deal Helvetica is by opening the PostScript Metrics file. Adding insult to injury, Arial cannot be deleted or moved, access is always denied, presumably because it is always active as the system font. In previous versions of Windows, there might be a way to change the default font in the display scheme, but this option seems to be gone (or moved) in Windows XP.

So it is just me being a troublemaker? =) None of our Mac gurus who have to deal with Windows at work have come across this issue? Ah well, I will try to bug Adobe with the free support call and see if they have heard of this issue. Thanks all.

I've heard of people having all sorts of strange problems installing windows fonts, but I've never heard of one font being substituted for another... I assume you've tried re-installing Helvetica, rebooting the machine, etc.?

I think I'd contact Microsoft support instead of Adobe... assuming the problem is occurring in more than one program.

I don't have that problem in Photoshop 6 and win2k pro. What programs are doing this? It could be an XP bug.
