North American image map

I can't seem to locate a clickable north american image map that is available for borrowing. It seems like a lot of work to create one, anyone have any ideas?

That map "mapusa511" appears to have been lifted from another site jsmadeeasy.

You probably need to go to it to check on their conditions of use

I don't think it would be too hard to make one in DreamWeaver. This way you can have complete control over the image you decide to use as well as the areas you decide to make clickable.

I agree with Alex. Finding a USA map and mapping out the picture would probably be the best route. As Alex said Dreamweaver has a great image mapper, but there are a lot of good ones out there. I would be wary of borrowing graphics because you can always run into issues with copyright.

Yes but you will end up with all rectangle slices. With image maps you can have all sorts of shapes that can create hot spots that mirror the states shape.

GoLive also has a "point and click" imagemap interface... in my experience, it's surprisingly difficult to find any really good maps that are free for re-use, much less any maps with interactive features.

btw, what about the copyright of geography maps? obviously there are different detailed maps, and a mapping company copyrights its detailed material.

however, something so universal as a geography map, it’s already copyrighted?

where to find maps freely available for anyone?

is there a degree in which you could tell a map is a “universal shape”, and therefore, not copyrighted?

is there a level of detail in which i could say “hey man, this shape is universal, so i’m not copying your map!”?

or everytime i need to use a map i have to use one i’ve myself drawed? (in this case, you’re also copying another version!)

trismegisto - Most clip art packages come with plenty of states and countrys that are royalty free.

Any map from CIA, USGS, NGS, NOAA, or any other government agency is public domain and freely reproducible. If these maps have been changed or updated by a private entity, though, they could be covered under copyright.

actually this also includes NASA images which have really cool space maps and star related stuff.
