Batch process for transparent border advice

I want to take all my product photos from a website and batch process them to have a transparent border, maybe a ripped edge transparency on all 4 sides.

Is there an easy way to do this? I use GIMP.

could you do it in CSS instead? e.g. set padding on the img tag, and set the ripped effect as a background? that way if you change your mind later, its easily undone

And it adds nothing to all those individual file sizes. Another plus.
