Simply, what would you all recommend as the best FREE icon editor tool out there?

Ideally, something which has a lot of features to it and you don't have to buy it after a month...

thanks for any help... :)

favicon.com used to have a free one that would pop up when you visited the site. I think there was something over at SourceForge as well. Not sure if those are still around, or if they charge for them now.

There aren't any good free ones around anymore (that I've found).

Did a search over at Google and there are a few out there (broke the link just in case for TOS)...

I haven't found any that have the functionality I need, but my main job is icon design. I would just look around and see what you need. If it is a one off thing then get a demo. If you are looking for software to use daily then I think you will find that you need to pay for it. I use a program called microangelo, but it does cost $50. It really depends on what you need it for. If this is just to create favicons then I would suggest using demos.

>>my main job is icon design<<

That's a narrowly focused gig, Korkus! I always wondered where all those icons came from, now I know! ;)

Every application that my company designs has anywhere between 500 and 1500 icons. There is only so much you can do with 16x16 and 16 or 256 colors.

For Mac users, Iconographer is a great -- and inexpensive ($15) -- shareware app. It allows you to make icons for Classic MacOS, OSX and Windows. That's what I finally switched to after favicon.com took down their free online favicon generator.

I will have to check out AWicons. I always love how icon tools show 128x128 at true color graphics. I want to see some 16x16 at 16 color to really show its features.
