Image Flicker Pressing Buttons

I sliced a large image 1600px wide into two pieces. When I browse the page and press menu buttons there is a blindingly noticeable flicker in which the background shows through precisely the size of the slice.

Are there any possible causes to why this might happen?

Does it occur on different browsers? How is the image positioned on the page? How big are the 2 slices in K? What format are they? Are you using javascript on the page? I have seen this happen with javascript: links also.

It looks like its loading another page and the amount of time to load is extremely minimal.

Are your menu buttons executing serverside code?

You are hitting the web server so you will see different results everytime. You are basically reloading the page. Have you tried viewing it with a 56k modem? You might find that you will have a longer flash the slower the connection. The browser gets the code then loads the images from cache. Your images are larger so it takes longer to grab and display.

Even using .net I have not seen real seamless serverside form use. The only ideas I know are either use javascript and css to execute or use frames. I know frames are not an option. You might want to post this problem in a forum dealing with the technology you are using (PHP, .net, Browser). Some people in there might have a fix for you.

To fix the problem I ended up importing the image from a style sheet. But everything validated before- so I'm not sure what's going on.

In actuality, this is probably a better scenario as far as standards are concerned.
