Adding text to a thumbnail image

Can any members give advice on the following...

When adding text to a thumbnail image (150px wide x 100px high),
which font should i use to get the text looking clear, sharp and readable?

Whats more important is thew file type you save it as. Use gif or png instead of jpg.
