When I import images (both gifs/pngs) into PPT, the fonts look blurred...anti-aliased really. Has anyone had this problem and how can I get around it?
When I import the exact same images into Word, they remain clean and sharp.

Not seen that particular problem - However I usually get out of trouble with MS products by using large GIF's (approx 300%) and resizing them down. This keeps clarity for screen and bog standard printing too.
