I'm thinking that as long as you stick to using PNG more like you would a gif, with binary transparency instead of the cool alpha transparency that PNG supports but many browsers still do not, you're pretty well safe.

I suppose I really ought to download one of the Mac PNG apps listed on the libpng.org site, and give it a try...

As compared to gif: Smaller file sizes possible, wider range of color supported, no messy patent/licensing issues [burnallgifs.org]...

I am a little behind on PNG. Can you make animations?

There is a related format called MNG for animation... I don't really know anything about it though.

[ligpng.org...] seems to be the central repository of info on all things PNG/MNG related... Here [libpng.org] is their page of applications that support the MNG format.

Advantages of PNG (portable network graphic):

-lossless compression scheme
-supports 8-bit indexed color, 16-bit greyscale, and 24-bit color.
-smaller file size than GIF in most cases
-variable transparency levels
