Hey,

I've recently developed a PHP script that allows users to choose their continent and then it displays a picture of that continent. Now I just need to get some pictures of them but I'm not sure where I could get some without infringing copyrights. So could anyone give me an idea of where or what to search for to find some that I'm allowed to use?

Thanks.

I would think that the content itself (the continent) is not copyrightable, but each artist's rendition is. The safest thing you could do is visit a stock art house like istock and find what you want, secure the use rights on the cheap and have everyone be happy. The money spent is well worth the value of not having to redraw it yourself.

Try the NASA or USGS sites. Most of the images on their are not copyrighted, if you're in US you already payed for them anyway. :P A quick search through google and even found some adobe .ai files if you're familiar with using them.

Try the CIA Worldbook. That has maps and is free to use.

Thanks both and yeah I'm familiar with .ai files.

Would it be ok for me to edit those images, say I don't want all the details on there just a one colour image?

I don't see what you can't edit but I would check the documentation on each site.

I ended up buying a stock, it has 9 seperate globes with different angles of the globe on each one which was exactly what I wanted and it only cost me $5. It says you can use it on a website as long as it is kept below the size of 800px or so, so people can't steal the image.

Thanks for the help guys.

<snip> provides maps of the continents but I have to warn you that the maps are just outlined without any other details on them. Don't know if this will fit your needs.
