Do you mean software to do the job yourself (GIMP) or packages in terms of service (local printcompanies, copyshops, art students, small design firms that are willing to negotiate about deals)?

I mean do it yourself packages, is it possible to use any microsoft office package like publisher?

I know i can use paint, the the results are primitive in the extreme,

This was discussed just last week.

I also use stockphoto, and istock, but for images, not icons. A $10 accound will get you several downloads, pay as you go.

Adobe ImageStyler is a good usable program, but it's out of rotation.
Copies are occasionally available via Ebay.

cheap icons and logos are like cheap copy and articles ..occasionally you can be first on the golden vein ..and pick up gems for nothing ..

but knowing what images work and designing them is a talent that one is born with just like writing or singing ..one can improve upon it ..but if you aint got it ..no amount of software or tricks will get you it ..

you are maybe aware of the short comings of what you have and or can do ..

but..

to the pros amongst us the bad artwork is as obvious as a bum note in beethoven ..

"for want of a nail"

bite the bullet ..pay a pro..

In the long run ..you'll see why ..

'corse ..I'm biased ..but your customers can see the difference too :-)
