Old thread, but the appropriate place to post the last Codestyle Font Survey results for Windows, Mac & Unix - results as of March 16, 2002

Most Commonly Installed Fonts:

Bookman beat out Times New Roman on Windows? Wow... And I wouldn't have guessed Comic Sans for such wide distribution either!

But it does look like the MS basic font pack is almost universal for Mac/Win machines... and if you include Helvetica in your sans-serif set, and Lucida (!) in your serifs, Linux is mostly covered too. (Linux is what throws the monkey wrench in the works, apparently!)

If you want to use "out of the norm" fonts, that most comps have, ive noticed these 2 font on more and more pcs (according to my research on school pcs, the ones at Future Shop, and Radiochack :)):

-Century Gothic
-Impact

Both stylisticly different from time and arial, but still popular amongst most comps....

I've gone back to CodeStyle several times after I first happened upon it. For me, it altered some preconceptions - Comic Sans? Who would've guessed!

I found the site when I was helping a friend who wished to use some "less common" fonts on her first web site, since her basic design was crafted around these particular fonts, I sought a good reference to aid in explaining why, it is best to stick with "commonly installed" fonts that also have comparable second and third level backups.

This is one of the things I notice quickly on "newbies" site's - they like to live "font dangerously" - worse thing is, most don't even know it.

Just wondering if i put a weird font on my site, and the visitor obviously doesnt have it, what font replaces it by default? is there a default replacement font?

I have a brand new Mac with OS9.2 & 10 out of the box ... haven't touched a thing. Its sitting down in my new office, so can't check for you tonight, but if someone wants to tell me where to look for it (sorry, but I have no idea), I'd be happy to tell you what is there?

Whatever browser you are using lets you set the default fonts -- proportional and fixed width. They are usually set to default to versions of Times and Courier.

I like to reset mine to Wingdings or some other kind of symbol font when I'm checking pages. That way I can easily spot any places where I forgot to give some preferred options.

It's best to give a list, especially if you try for some of the less popular fonts. Make sure to list a widely available Mac and PC font as the last resort.

Liane... no idea where OSX keeps its fonts, but in 9.2...

1. Double click your hard drive icon
2. Double click your "System Folder"
3. Look for the "Fonts" folder and double click it...

There's your list of fonts. :)
