HTML compression

I did a site search and couldn't find anything on this...maybe I searched for the wrong phrase, but...

Does compressing your HTML pages (e.g. ridding it of all extraneous spaces, quotes, comments, etc. using something like HTML Compressor) so that your pages are just one big pile o' non-validating html effect the way they're spidered?

I've experimented with this on some lower traffic sites and have not seen any adverse effect on spidering.

How opera and other stricter rendering browsers display this is another matter, but in IE I've seen no problems.
