There are probably numerous approaches & tools. I prefer Linux over Windows for hosting, however I'll do what needs doing.
This is for a revenue project and don't mind spending a little money if required to get a decent quality product. I need the whole thing to be easy for the media provider (remote stream) and the client (viewer).
Thanks!

I want to build a site that has live video streaming from remote sources and also on-demand video. I know I can get the Real media server and Microsoft has something too.
Funny you should bring this up. I just officially launched a similar setup this week. If you are using a third party provider for storage and streaming, you won't need to do anything special from your end other than obfuscate the URIs to the streams.
I would appreciate tips on this ... we are building a site to stream church services from various churches and the more we can control costs the better. I guess we'll need to decide about the costs of using another service on the backend. Who would you recommend?
I'm a little confused on what you're up to. If you are currently using a third party provider to host and stream the media for you, all you'll need to do is link to those media files from your site. Once the user clicks the link, depending on how the files were encoded, will determine which media player is launched on the users system. In my case, the streams were encoded to launch Windows Media Player.
You won't need anything on "your" backend. Everything will be handled by the streaming host who is a third party provider. I believe they typically charge based on storage and amount of throughput per month. I'd shop around because prices are all over the place. ;)
