Where do you get free images from to use on your site?

Don't want to get caught up in copyright

I'm putting together a travel website on one country. Basically where do you get your images from? I can't just steal them from other peoples sites - or can i?!

Free or paid stock libraries. I recommend shutterstock.com.

Hi rightz.

you CANNOT take images from anothers site and reproduce them as your own - as you say it is stealing and is not legal.

there has been some good discussion here about image copyright and theft [google.com]

But as mentioned in brief above there are dozens of stock photo sites out there - some are free, some royalty free and some premium.

Under the circumstances I should expect you to take a camera when you visit and photograph the locations you are describing.

I completely agree but I don't claim to be a porfessional photographer by any means. Sometimes you like to use other peoples just for a little extra quality.

So long as you get the express permission of the copyright holder, you're golden. There may or may not be a fee for granting you permission. However, as you recognize others can at times provide what you cannot, a reasonable fee certainly shouldn't seem an inappropriate condition of use.

Here is the best free stock photo site I have found. All you have to do is sign up.

and the best *almost* free is istockphoto - I don't mind having to 'pony up' one dollar for a decent photo - and they've got the inventory, and that's what matters to me - I might look through 3000 photos to get the very one I'm happy with!

You might try to contact Government Tourist Board of that country . They usually have free photos for journalists they can email to you. Or sometimes, you can download it from their official website.
Good luck :-)

I got sick of surfing trying to find decent pics for use in clients sites . So i went to a local computer store. I found a great royalty free photo disk with 10.000 photos for 9.99
