I use Fireworks v4 for most of my web graphics needs. Is there an open source alternative? What can the gurus suggest? I'm looking for fuctionality that equals fireworks. I know the GIMP, but that is just too photo oriented. I want to combine vector graphics, bitmap and text, and also would like the frame and slicing fuctionality Fireworks offers to help with mass production and toggle graphics.
I'm not a graphics expert, so I am a bit confused about the PNG format. When I use it in Fireworks, I can work with bitmaps and vector and text elements separately, but when I open a PNG with any other program that I've come across so far, it is treated as a bitmap only.
So the perfect editor I'm looking for would be one that recognises the different elements in my existing PNG (Fireworks) files.
Any open source ideas?

Anyway, I think I found something really good! It is called Inkscape and is an open source scalable vector graphics editor.
There are some usage examples explaining how web sites and graphics can be created with Inkscape and then use the GIMP to create slices and such.
[inkscape.org...] for more info.
