How to make a favicon.ico?

Hello,

I would like to add a favicon.ico file, but have no idea how - it is fine to build a gif file of 10 by 15 pixels, save it as favicon.gif, change it to .ico and place it in the same directory as my index.html?

No, a favicon is not a gif. However, there are lots of programs, many of them freeware, that you can use to convert your image to a functional .ico file.

Photoshop has an export filetype for this. (It exports any filetype to an indexed-color mode file with an extension of ico.)

And a lot of browsers actually show a renamed .gif file as well. But an ico file is actually a number of different images (different sizes) in one. You have the 16*16 normal icon, but also the 32*32 bigger one.

Very simple to do from shell--provided ImageMagick is present on the server:

convert picture.png -resize 16x16! favicon.ico

Just change 'picture.png' to the name of your image.

Dynamic Drive has an online fav icon converter. Just upload any image and it will convert it for you, and shows you a preview of what it will look like.

The freeware IrfanView is able to save a picture as an .ico file. It is also an excellent image viewer.

The Gimp allows you to save various formats as .ico and will prompt you for bit/color depth - very handy.

Where do you place favicon.ico? In the root? And do you have to call it in all your html pages?

You don't place it anywhere except in the root directory of your site. And you don't call it from a page or anywhere else.

Simply upload it to your server and viola, you have a favicon!

It won�t, however, show up on all pages of your site, unless you place a copy of the favicon in all sub directories. These can be different art. i.e. A favicon placed in the root directory only works on files in the root.

Simply put this small code inside <head></head> : <link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.example.com/favicon.ico" />

However you may replace http://www.example.com/favicon.ico with http://www.example.com/example/images/favicon.ico

You may have to download the Windows package, which you can also get by clicking here:

Now all you have to do is extract icoformat.8bi to your plugins folder in adobe. Now the next time you start Adobe you will have the option to save, make, create, and load .ico files!
