regale me with your ideas about why a client's thumbnails look crap

client thinks it's somehow my fault so i'd like to get it resolved

Ah, clients.

So their site has a massive amount of photo galleries, and while the full size pics look fine, the thumbnails look very choppy... now I can tell you that it's not what you immediately think:

#1: They're not generated using any server script
#2: They're not given specific dimensions in the HTML
#3: The effect is cross-browser

My guess is that their thumbnail creating software is either a p.o.s., or they're using it wrong. But does anyone have any better ideas? I really don't want to have to drive to the client's house just to show them they don't know how to create thumbnails...

Are these jpegs or gifs? If gifs, they need to be converted in to rgb before changing the size or the results will look like what you are talking about...

Thanks for the reply tc-

They are pulling jpegs out of a digital camera, then branding them and creating thumbs... I'll check to see what format they're shooting in and how it's translating to their software.
