Your opinion on floating menus

Potentially useful? Or annoying and waste of time?

Likely, you've seen the floating menu bar in about.com's pages - i personally find this somewhat annoying since the menu bar options aren't relevant to me (they try to get you to sign up for a newsletter). However, I'm wondering if such a floating menu bar might be useful if the menu options were relevant, such as a button to "apply now" or "purchase now." Do you think this might be worthwhile? Or just annoying and actually hurt conversions/sales?

EXTREMELY annoying. I have never heard a single person express any other opionion.

One with Puchase Now would be worse, I think it would make me homecidal.

Extremely annoying... and floating menus sometimes don't let users open up windows in tabs...

The majority of web savvy people will find it annoying - people seem to hate things being forced upon them. It terms of conversation rates, why not test it out on a couple of pages?
