Animated gif creation tool needed.

Is there really only a few choices?

I have had a hard time finding a good selection of tools for animated gif creation. I found one named Active GIF Creator 2.22. This has poor documentation and support. What is the best tool?

How much money do you have? I like using fireworks because of the handy support for vector and raster images and the integration with freehand - but the final anigif can be quite bulky. I know that GIMP (freeware) has a support for ani gifs but have never tried using it for them.
