It was worth it for me for just the file browser and colour correction chapters. I'm not too sure about the retouching section though (I like to leave the photos unretouched.)

The same main principal applies so digital images as it does to conventional cameras. If you want good quality crystal clear images then a lot of the work will be in the preperation. Think about lighting, background colors, range ect. Spend a fair amount of time taking several shots of the same item, at least some will produce a good enough result to work with.
The page you showed as a referance certanly does make good use of the images. What you will see is, a lot of those images use image cropping to crop right round the image and show no background or other items. This really makes an image stand out.
This effect is used to great effect. Another great example of images applied will is apple.com, stunning site IMO.
It all seams to come down to preperation when you shoot and time and attention to detail in your editing program.
