I want to erase the background of an image in Photoshop. I did Filter----->Extract and I thought I was erasing the background. However, when I did a preview, the background became a gray and white checkerboard. How can I remove the background completely?

The gray and white checkerboard means there is nothing there - it has to put something on the screen, so it puts the checkerboard.

You can test it by inserting a new monotone colored layer under your picture - the gray and white will disappear

Click on the eye next to the layer called background. You can't delete it, since you probably opened the file and the original file was the background. After you copy it and create another layer, you will be able to get rid of it by clicking on they eye. This means it will not be there when you save file as.
