Is it possible to extract an embedded PSD file from an Illustrator file? Copy and Paste doesn't seem to do it...

Yes. However I have never had luck in keeping the layers intact. If you wanted, you could just File-->Export and choose PSD from the file format menu. Like I said though, you'll end up with a single layered PSD (Anybody know if there is a workaround there?).

If I REALLY need to do this I just take and separate each layer and save them each as an EPS. Then I open each EPS in photoshop and reconstruct all the layers there. If at all possible I do all my work in photoshop and then move to Illustrator, not the other way around.

Man what a weird export command. You are right PSD exports are flattened... I tried a muliti layer tiff export to PSD and it broke the thing into about 50 layers... Ver 10 Illustrator BTW.

As integrated as Adobe products are supposed to be you would sure think you could work backwards with an embedded PSD from Illustrator quite naturally.

It's clear I don't understand the Postscript that's being written on a Place command into Illustrator.
