Batch processing in photoshop....

Tips on how to get this to work.

One of my coworkers needs to resize/format a folder of pictures using photoshop. So far she has had trouble getting it to work and has only been able to get photoshop to rename the files in the folder. Basically what we would have is a folder of pngs of various sizes. We would need to resize them to all be a certain width or height and save them as gifs or jpegs.

If this is not a practical thing to do please let me know. If it is the way to go I would greatly appreciate a short howto if anyone has time.

Thanks.

Hmm.. What version of photoshop. Older then 7 had some issues with batch jobs. If you have 7 i will write something up for you.

This is done all the time in PS. There is an example in help under 'batch files'... (you need to select the output folder).

you can

a) script it (which is more powerful and complex, not really something ive had much to do with. Also i think you need a plug-in for scripting in v.7)

or b) use an action, which is pretty straight forward, but more restrictive in terms of using logic etc

for an action,

i) you would need to create a new action and start recording.

ii) open one image, and do whatever you need to it, including optimising and saving if required.

iii) use the 'batch' command, select the source and destination folders, and fill ion the other bits of stuff.

iv) go have a coffee while it does its stuff.

n.b. probably best to test your batch with one or two images before setting it loose on lots. Also set the destination to be different from the source, so you still have the originals if it doesnt quite go to plan

good luck!
