Anyone interested in a photo contest?

Who gets the best results with Photoshop

I was reading Bubzeebub's post and must say that I am very interested in improving my skills both as a photographer and with Photoshop.

I don't know how we could do this but I imagine we will need help from a mod.

I'd like to supply one shot of a specific size (large file) and have everyone edit it for content to demonstrate artistic abilities or "an eye" for content.

No holds barred but final image size cannot be any larger than 290 pixels wide.

Can a mod help us set this up? I have a specific photo in mind which I had one heck of a time editing and would love to see if anyone else can do better.

We would have to keep a log of what steps were taken in Photoshop to get the final result. Maybe we can all learn something here?

Just so we are all working with the same tools. Apples to apples sort of thing. Its the best way to determine how much is talent and how much is the photo itself.

However, if you want to use something else which clearly gets better results ... go for it! But you must divulge the tool used.

I'm interested forsure, I'm new to this site, this is actually my first posting. If I get the file sent to me I would take a crack at it.

I would love to join in if it was within my capabilities and i have the time. I can't see why it wouldn't be viable as we had the Icon-A-Thon competition near when i first joined.

People are always looking at expressing their artistic talents, and getting them out there for people to view. I think it's a GREAT idea! I'm in!

oh I wish it were all that simple as saying "lets have a contest".

I am warm to the idea, but let me consider this and run it by legal next week.

There is a strong previous history to this that we have to consider. We tried this in 2000 and flopped badly when several of the photos turned out to be copyrighted graphics.

I want in! I don't use Photoshop, but I put a sample image in my user profile that should let me compete ;)

You might want have the original authors provide a downloadable source file for proof of authenticity. No proof, no submit?

Actually Brett, the single photo I am suggesting we all work with is one I took on New Years Eve. The image belongs to nobody but me.

I am suggesting that we investigate who can best manipulate the photo using Photoshop (or maybe other programmes) to see who has the best technique for making an otherwise poor shot into a very useable image. Composition will also be a key factor.

I have no problem with everyone using this photo and will happily provide a release. If everyone who participates also provides a release, what's the harm?

I may be missing your point though, can you clarify?

I can partially understand Brett's urge to get this checked by legal first.

But aren't all the weekly Gizmo Quiz images someone else's property?

Good point. Since the image is mine and I am allowing it to be used and anyone participating is obviously doing so willingly ... I really don't see a problem?

Well, if we do this - we will start from scratch with a photo that isn't a members. We can't have any insinuation even remotely of interest conflicts.

OK ... its too bad though because the photo I had in mind to use presents several, very particular problems. I was hoping to see what others could do with it.

The point was to overcome the problems and make an otherwise unusable photo ... useable.

There are oftentimes that you can't go back and get that same shot again, so was trying to use a shot which could be saved if you are a wizard with PhotoShop if not a camera!.

So what now then? Brett would you be able to supply Liane a suitable photo to use?

If we purchase a royalty free image from stock I don't think it'll have as much potential or indeed be as challenging as the one Liane describes?

How about if Liane agrees in writing here, that said image is to be freely available for use for by anyone, for any purpose, anytime now or in the future. Would that be enough?

I'm guessing the answer would be negative?

What about if we all do it & post it outside of here so that the site doesn't take any grief legally-although it would be great for anyone as far as a learning process.......

Check out Fark,com, they do this on a daily basis. Their FAQ also explains how to get free image hosting.
