Protect download pictures

Protect download pictures. How to do this?

Hallo,

I once saw on a site that when you right-click and save a photo from this guy's website that the saved photo has a red X mark over it. The photo on the site was perfect. He didn't work with a background image with an image over it (checked the site code). I don't know if he used any server side script. Can someone provide me a with solution how to do this so I can use it to protect my own images? Thanx.

Sounds like simple JS, which can be just as simply bypassed.

Athough I don't really know the tech behind it, I believe they are using some sort of middleman to dole out the images like httaccess or a program. When they down load the X picture is sent instead of the real one. Try a search for image protection. I believe there are a few software packages out there for this. Last time I looked they were not cheap and they have to be loaded on the server.

Server-side image protection, mmmm. Speculating aloud, a suitably sneaky PHP script should be able to do this in much the same way Apache protects files from server theft (ie by examining the referrer).

Speculating further, the same PHP code could generate the protected image on the fly (by merging the original with a "red X" image at delivery time).

Assuming this design is technically possible, surely it's already been coded many times over?!?!

You can also add protection via embedded information in picture via watermarks in photoshop.
