My favicon doesn show up!

i used a 16 X 16 jpg file, and manually rename it under the dos prompt to .ico, and put it as the same dir as my index.html, but it doesnt show up. Can anyone help?

And secondly, do i still need to input

in my index.html?

.jpg isn't the right format. Just renaming it to ICO isn't going to do the trick. You need to find a specialty program to generate .ico format files, as far as I can tell.

favicon.com has an online icon generator and a downloadable icon generating program available... You could also search on a shareware site (tucows.com or shareware.com always give me good results) for the word "favicon" or "ico" and "generator"

<added2>as long as your favicon.ico file is in your base web site directory (the same one as your index.html) you don't need to add a link tag to any of your files. IE will automatically look in your base directory for it.</added2>

There's a site search feature (if you haven't already found it) at the top of every page. Search for the word "favicon" and you should come up with every thread ever written on the subject.

On not needing the line in index.htm, is this true for ANY file in the root?

It's true for any file in the entire site. Say you have your root directory, and a subdirectory /info/... If someone bookmarks /root/info/file1.html, IE will first look for the favicon in the /info/ directory, and if there isn't an icon there, it checks the root directory.

No matter which page in your site someone bookmarks, IE will drill back to the root directory hunting for a favicon.ico file... so as long as you have on in the root directory, it will get picked up.
