Can anyone tell me the easiest way to put together say a small graphic image containing something like $9.50.

Is there an easy way using Photoshop I could do this? I hope someone can help me with this as I have no clue!

i'm assuming this is for web publication. many people will tell you to just use HTML/CSS, but that's another can of worms so here goes -

launch photoshop!

File -> New
this will open a small window.
in this window set the parameters for width and height, in pixels. next set the resolution to 72 pixels per inch. next select RGB in the Mode dropdown menu. you can select the transparent radio button for background. click OK.

your new document will appear.

select the paint bucket(looks like a paint bucket) tool in the tools palette, if you can't see it then it is hidden under the gradient tool--just click and hold and the paint bucket will appear.

click on the foreground color box to open the color selector, select the color you want for the background. this is also located in the tools palette. it looks like a square on top of another square.

with the paint bucket tool still selected, click anywhere in your document to fill it with color.

repeat the color selection process to choose the color you want for your text.

click on the text tool(horizontal) in the tools palette, it looks like a capital T.

notice the property palette at the top of the screen, this is where you control your text, just like a word processor.

type inside your document--$9.95--, highlight the text like a word processor, change the parameters in the property palette to suit your needs.

in the tools palette, select the move tool, it looks like a black arrow next to a gothic cross. click and drag the text until it is located where you want it to be. if the text won't move, make sure the text layer is selected in the layers palette.

File -> Save as
save the document as a PSD for your records, it will maintain the layers. this file can be save to your hard drive wherever you keep your documents.

File -> Save for Web
this opens the Save for Web window. choose GIF in the optimized file format dropdown menu. given the size of this graphic i wouldn't worry too much about the other parameters, but feel frr to play around and take note of how the file size and quality changes.

Save
save into your appropriate web folder. Format dropdown should be images only. the window will close and bring you back into the photoshop work area. you can now close and quit, your optimized graphic resides in the folder you saved it into.

good luck!
