Reducing the quality of an avi to reduce the file size

What can I use to do this?

Hi All,

I have some avi movies that I have gotten off my camcorder onto my PC, however, they rang from 700Mb to 1.2Gb. I need to shrink these files to a nice download size like under 30Mb. I am willing to reduce the size and quality of the file to make this possible, however, I do not know of a program that can do this. Does anyone know of any?

What you can do is import the file with a program such as Premiere, or any advanced video editing one will do, export it to its lowest quality, make it an MPEG if possible and reduce the resolution/size.

If you have Flash MX, import it and then export it in the lowest possible quality format.

Should do it.

Thanks Sid.

I didn't relise Flash MX could do that. I'll also look at converting it to MPEG.

I've used EO Video and the DiVX/XViD codecs to get nice file sizes. I don't think you'll manage ~30M out of a 700M file without making the screen so small it is unviewable. Your best option in that case would be to make several clips and have them run in sequence. Note that with the divx or xvid codecs you will want to use mp3 for the audio to maximize your size to compression ratio.

That or use a lighter compression and offer the files as a VCD (Video Compact Disc) or DVD.

Convert to Windows Media especially if you're going to be putting it on a web server.
