file with cdr extension not opening

Someone sent me a file as an attachment as .cdr extension...which is a corel draw file right?
I have downloaded it from my email and saved it on my desktop....now when im trying to open it in corel it says the following error message.... " either xyz.cdr is not importable using the selected filter or this format is not supported"

what does this mean......can't i open this file ....wot is the problem ..please help...i need this file urgently...but cant seem to open it....

Maybe a version problem with Corel?

Try going to the Corel.com website. You can download a free 30 trial of Corel 12. If it is a version issue, Corel 12 should open it for you.

If that doesn't work, sticky me your email address, and I will send you my email address.

If you don't mind me seeing the file, Email the file to me and I will see if I can open it and convert it to another easier format such as .WMF

If you want to keep the file private, then hopefully the Corel 12 will work for you.

There may also be some 3rd party graphic programs that may open it. I know there are some that open Corel files (Paint Shop Pro is one). But, they may not open it if it's a newer version. Some only open Corel 9 or lower.

I think it is a version problem because i have version 9.....the thing is i cannot figure out where to download version 12 from:( i went to the site but it has the whole graphic suite...can someone please give me the direct link.......

I think you do have to download the whole graphic suite to get Corel 12.

It is a 186 mb download. I will sticky the download url to you. You do have to create a user name and password with them first.
