smi files error

why I am getting smi files in my error log?

hi, I am facing a big problem. I have a site where I use mid files for music.Now the problem is I am getting lots of entries for the music files in my error log, but all r with smi extension which I never use.I have checked those files in my server and I found all of them do exist but with mid extension.and all of them r perfectly ok.then why smi files r coming in log file when I dont use smi extension.

SMIL is a media positioning and timing markup language most often used in streaming media. SMIL sets the media window size dimensions, positions the media layout, audio control buttons, play, pause, rewind buttons, etc. Controls text captioning and transitions. Tells the player when to start playing the media clip, how long it will run, how many times it will play, where to locate the media file...all that stuff.

any time you stream a media clip through a player, from somewhere on the internet, chances are, there will be an accompanying smil (.smi) file.

my computer dumps them into my TEMP directory. I have to remember to clean it out once in a while.

I am getting the error on my server
File does not exist:/hoyeados.smi
What is the reason for it ?
(file hoyeados.mp3 is on my system)

You might be getting 'file does not exist' because there is no mimetype association. All my smil experience has been for the Real Player, but in your mime-type settings, associate the .smi format with whatever media player on your machine that supports media streaming.

Smil is a subset markup language of xml. It's been a few years, but if memory serves me, you can't just click on a .smi file and play it. A smil file is usually embedded or referenced in the metadata of a host file, usually the player's native file format, like .ra for real audio, .mov for quicktime, and possibly .swf for flash.

I'd look for a third accompanying file on your machine before trashing the .smi files. The mp3 you spoke of may have some kind of transitional effect (fade-in/out, time delayed start, etc) driven by the .smi file, referenced in even an html file. If all you want is the mp3 file , then trash the smil files.
